In the fire in a senior citizen complex in Capelle aan den IJssel, two injured people were transferred to the hospital, one of whom was seriously injured. Two people could be treated on the spot by ambulance personnel. A dog also died in the fire.
Rescue workers tried to resuscitate the dog on the spot, but to no avail.
About seventy to eighty people had to leave their homes in the complex because of the smoke released during the fire. They were received in the central hall of the same complex.
Shortly after midnight, most of the more than 70 residents were able to return to their accommodation. Five houses are not habitable for the time being. The residents of those homes are housed elsewhere.
The fire broke out earlier on Wednesday evening in the residential complex on St. Helena Bay. The fire broke out in a house on the first floor of the building, but grew into a major fire. The fire was quickly under control, but because there was a lot of smoke, residents of the complex had to leave their homes.
