Serie B club Livorno lets ten players go in the middle of the season NOW

Livorno made a striking decision on Wednesday in the middle of the season. The Serie B club said goodbye to no fewer than ten players, while it is still fighting relegation.

Livorno needs a little miracle to stay active at the second highest level. The team is in last place with seven rounds remaining, twelve points behind in the safe seventeenth place and Livorno chairman Aldo Spinelli does not think that that gap will be closed.

“We’re practically in Series C so contract extensions would be a waste of money,” Spinelli explains, choosing not to extend ten players’ expiring contracts, which are tied until July 1, by two months so they can finish the season with Livorno.

This means that Lukas Zima, Matías Silvestre, Federico Viviani, Luca Rizzo, Michele Rocca, Adrian Stojan, Manuel Marras, Franco Ferrari, Enrico Brignola and Robin Simovic can immediately look for a new employer.

Livorno thus only has ten players left in the selection, including the Dutch attacker Sven Braken, who came over from NEC last year. Trainer Antonio Filippini will therefore have to appeal to youth players in the last seven league matches.

According to the Italian news agency HERE the Italian Football Association (FIGC) has initiated an investigation into Spinelli’s conduct. That would be contrary to the principles of sportsmanship and fairness. Livorno will visit the number penultimate Trapani on Friday.
