Serbia includes Djokovic in their team for the ATP Cup

Novak Djokovic was inducted into the Serbian squad to contest the ATP Cup in January, an indication that the world number one could play the Australian Open a week later despite controversy over his vaccination status.

Organizers reported Tuesday that 18 of the world’s top 20 players will compete in the 16-country tournament that takes place on January 1-9 in Sydney. Djokovic leads first-seeded Serbia.

Djokovic has not publicly pledged to defend his title at the Australian Open. Nor has he said if he is vaccinated, although he is required to have both vaccines to play.

Although the ATP Cup does not have the same criteria to compete, being part of the Serbian team increases the possibility that Djokovic will try to seek his 10th title at Melbourne Park and reach his 21st Grand Slam championship to break the all-time record he shares with Roger. To play in Sydney without being vaccinated, the New South Wales state government will have to request an exception for Djokovic, and the 34-year-old will have to undergo a 14-day quarantine upon arrival.

Australia will be in Group B, alongside defending champions Russia and Italy and Austria, two strong rivals. The Australians are led by Alex de Miñaur.

Russia, which won the Davis Cup last week, will feature Daniil Medvedev – world number two – Andrey Rublev, Aslan Karatsev, Roman Safiullin and Evgeny Donskoy.

Serbia starts as a favorite in Group A, which also includes Norway, Chile and Spain. Nadal, sixth in the world rankings, was not included in the Spain team.

Germany, Canada, Great Britain and the United States are in Group C. Poland, Argentina and Georgia make up Group D.

The ATP Cup will be held at the Ken Rosewall Arena and the Olympic Park in Sydney.

The Australian Open kicks off on January 17.
