September brings a lot of sun and heat to Minho

The SOS Serra d’Arga Movement was present at the opening of the political year of the Ecologisto Os Verdes Party, in Porto, whose aim was to reinforce a position against the exploitation of lithium.

In the initiative, a nationwide campaign was launched to demystify “the indispensability for the decarbonisation” of lithium exploration, in Portugal, defended by the Government, comparing it, Os Verdes, with the “indispensability of a toilet for the environment when located in the middle of a kitchen ”.

In this sense, toilets were placed with the indication of places where exploration is planned.

“Our Serra d’Arga is not a toilet, gentlemen of government. There are people here, there is life, there is nature, there is heritage, there is landscape and there is a future! We will not allow even a scoop ”, writes the Movimento SOS Serra D’Arga in a publication on its Facebook page.

The Serra d’Arga covers an area of 10,000 hectares in the municipalities of Caminha, Vila Nova de Cerveira, Paredes de Coura, Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima, of which 4,280 are classified as a Site of Community Importance.

In early January, the name of the nine places covered by the public tender for the exploitation of lithium was released, in addition to the two contracts already announced in Montalegre and Boticas.

The areas of Serra d’Arga, Barro / Alvão, Seixo / Vieira, Almendra, Barca Dalva / Canhão, Argemela, Guarda, Segura and Maçoeira will be covered.

Clarification sessions

Meanwhile, the SOS Serra d’Arga Movement will promote this month a series of initiatives aimed at involving the community in the defense of this territory, carried out with national and international partners.

The first initiative will be a session with the theme “No to mines in the Serra d’Arga”, next Saturday, at 2:30 pm, in the Auditorium of the Moledo Library.

In a statement, the organization explains that this is an action of clarification and debate open to the public, with the support of the Union of Parishes of Moledo and Cristelo (UFMC).

The opening of the session will be in charge of the president of UFMC, Joaquim Guardão, and the presentations will be by Teresa Fontão (geologist), Fernando Cerqueira Barros (architect) and Carlos Seixas, spokesman for the SOS Serra d’Arga Movement.
