Hakan Aysal, 40, was vacationing in Turkey with his pregnant wife Semra Aysal, 32, when the tragedy happened. The 40-year-old pushed his wife off a cliff to be able to collect the insurance money and repay the seven loans he had taken out in her name. Semra was seven months pregnant at the time of the incident, in 2018.
Investigators were able to determine that Hakan’s act was premeditated, because he took out accident insurance in his name with a guarantee of 21,700 pounds (25,865.42 euros) just before committing the irreparable. He had also claimed full payment of the insurance shortly after the accident. But as an investigation was ongoing, he never received his money.
In his defense, Hakan explained that he was interested in “extreme sports” such as skydiving, bungee jumping or rafting, and that was why he took out life insurance. But the victim’s brother claimed that Hakan was dizzy.
Hakan, sentenced to life imprisonment, is today appealing to the Izmir Regional Court of Justice, in order to obtain a modification of his judgment. His appeal was accepted and the case was sent to Fethiye Criminal Court.
