The Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bob Menendez, spoke after he was indicted for accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in exchange for exploiting his senatorial position for the benefit of the Egyptian government.
Commenting on the indictment, Menendez said that “on Friday, the Southern District of New York filed charges against me. I understand that this may be very troubling. However, the allegations against me are merely allegations.”
He continued by saying: “For anyone who has known me throughout my 50 years of public service, they know that I have always fought for what is right.”
Menendez emphasized that his return “is always based on what I learned from growing up as the son of Cuban refugees, especially my mother, my hero, Evangelina Menendez. Everything I accomplished I worked for, despite the naysayers and everyone who underestimated me.”
The Senator concluded his comment by saying, “I realize that this will be the biggest fight yet. But as I have stated throughout this entire process, I firmly believe that when all the facts are presented, not only will I be vindicated, but I will remain an outstanding New Jersey Senator.” .
A federal indictment against the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and his wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, stated that they accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in exchange for exploiting the senator’s position for the benefit of the Egyptian authorities.
The list added that this includes providing sensitive information to the Egyptian government, and secretly helping to direct military aid to Egypt.
