Semiconductor shortage: PSA Rennes plant shut down next week

“The plant will be shut down from Monday 1:00 p.m. until Friday evening, with a resumption on Monday 26” April, the plant’s communications department told AFP.

Production has already been stopped in mid-March and last week, “with four canceled working sessions”, because “the semiconductor crisis which affects the entire industry and in particular the automobile industry”, according to the same source.

In a press release, the CFDT said “worried about the duration of this crisis and the financial impact for employees”.
“In view of this supply crisis which affects all the Group’s factories and which unfortunately could extend over the whole of 2021, the CFDT reiterates to the group’s management its request to open negotiations on the long-term partial activity “, continues the CFDT.

The union says to wait “a lot of the investment program of 20 billion euros to accelerate the relocation of Research & Development and production of semiconductors in France so that our industry is no longer dependent on productions from Taiwan”.

Located about ten kilometers south of Rennes, the Janais site, built in 1961, covers 138 hectares and is one of the group’s main French factories.
The site produces the Peugeot 5008 and the C5 Aircross and released nearly 94,000 vehicles from the chains in 2020, 80% of which are exported to 150 countries, according to the group’s website.

Peugeot 308 production at the Stellantis (PSA) plant in Sochaux (Doubs) has also recently been affected due to the global shortage of semiconductors.
