Semeru Erupts, Pronojiwo Residents Lumajang Panic and Flee

Residents panicked because Semeru erupted and sprayed volcanic ash and gravel

Pronojiwo – The highest mountain on the island of Java, Semeru, has increased its activity. In fact, residents in Supiturang Village, Pronojiwo District in the hamlet closest to the peak of Semeru evacuated independently, Tuesday (01/12/2020)

The reason is that there was an eruption and a rain of ash before dawn accompanied by quite dense gravel and residents became worried. Many residents were on the road and descending to an area further from the slopes of Semeru.

Wawan Hadi Siswoyo, Head of PKL for the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in Lumajang Regency, confirmed the increase in Semeru’s activities. However, Wawan denied that Semeru had a big eruption.

“Yes, residents carried out independent evacuations due to increased activity of Mount Semeru. The TRC team has already headed to the location,” he explained.

Uun, a resident of Supiturang Village, Pronojiwo District, stated that Semeru brought out the ashes. There was a sound like a very loud broken tire, when the residents came out the rain water had changed color because it was mixed with volcanic ash.

“The residents of Gumuk Mas Hamlet have evacuated, mas, the rain is thick ash and gravel,” he explained.

Karno, another Pronojiwo resident also informed that the eruption of Mount Semeru made the rain water turn brown because it was mixed with volcanic ash. In the hamlet closest to the peak of Semeru, there is also a smell of sulfur.

“Now in Pronojowo, residents leave their homes, residents are worried and evacuate independently,” he concluded. (Yd / red)
