“Seismic event” at the Creighton mine, near Sudbury

Natural Resources Canada and the mining company Vale have confirmed that there was a “seismic event” at the Creighton mine near Sudbury on Friday evening.

The earth has shaken three times, according to a statement issued by Vale on Saturday morning. The events were recorded between 2.6 and 3.7 on the Richter scale and took place between 9 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

The employees were all identified and brought to the surface safely. Day shift has been canceled at Creighton mine [samedi] as we launch our normal seismic management protocols. We apologize for any disruption this may have caused to local residents, can we read in the press release.

The Natural Resources Canada website reports two earthquakes exactly one hour apart. The first was recorded at 3.2 on the Richter scale and took place at 9:19 p.m., 2 km below the earth’s surface. The second, 3.7 on the Richter scale, took place at 10:19 p.m., also at a depth of 2 km.

In both cases, Natural Resources Canada points out that it is a mining event. There is no damage report, and none would be expected.
