Security forces arrest more than 500 people for violating rules – Executive Digest

Between March and August 2020, 535 people were detained for the crime of disobedience, for violating the rules imposed in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, this Friday the ‘Jornal de Notícias’ (JN), which cites data from the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI).

The arrests were carried out by the Portuguese police forces, the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police (PSP), which mostly detained 345 citizens (corresponding to 64% of the total), outside their residence, not complying with the duty of confinement to which they were subject.

Even so, according to the same publication, this group is subdivided into two: 157 cases of infection or suspicion, which for that reason were subjected to “mandatory confinement” and also 188 citizens who should have obeyed the “general duty of home care”, although they are not part of the cases described above.

MAI data also reveals that 428 of the 535 arrests, equivalent to 80% of the total, occurred during the state of emergency in Portugal, that is, between 22 March and 2 May 2020. In turn, when the country crossing the state of calamity, between 3 May and 30 June, 52 arrests were recorded. In July, Portugal was in a state of calamity, alertness and contingency, having registered 48 arrests and since 1 August until now, there are seven more detainees.
