Secret nitrogen information drives a wedge between Limburg and the government: ‘Bizarre’ | Inland

These are local sources of nitrogen precipitation in the vicinity of sensitive nature reserves. The State knows the detailed information about these local sources, but refuses to share it. According to the government, that information would be privacy-sensitive. As a result, Limburg does not know which nitrogen sources such as companies or traffic routes cause the greatest nitrogen nuisance in vulnerable nature areas.

The province needs this information to draw up a plan of action for the nitrogen crisis before the end of this year.

The Limburg deputy Hubert Mackus (CDA) calls it incomprehensible that this information is not shared by one government with another. Without the necessary data from the government, the province itself has to do a lot of extra calculations. However, the province wants to accelerate because the nitrogen crisis threatens to affect many economic projects.

Livestock farms

Limburg wants to know, among other things, which cattle farms are located near nature areas that qualify for a purchase scheme to reduce nitrogen emissions. In Limburg it could be between 75 and 100 companies.

The detailed nitrogen data is known to, among others, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).
