Second edition of the book “Fertilization of Crops of Chile” published

Ten years after its first version, INIA researchers, led by specialist Juan Hirzel, deliver an enlarged and corrected publication, with analysis and recommendations for the most relevant agricultural crops in the country.

A Book called to become mandatory reference material for advisers, farmers and agricultural professionals, has just been published by the Institute of Agricultural Research, INIA, in Chillán. It is about “Crop Fertilization in Chile, second edition increased and corrected”, by the editor and researcher of INIA Quilamapu, Juan Hirzel Campos.
The publication has 568 pages, divided into 14 chapters, each of which was written by INIA specialists in soil fertility and crop production from different INIA Regional Centers, incorporating the experiences of the entire country, to which the professionals from private companies in the sector joined.
This second edition, enlarged and corrected, is an update of the eponymous 2011 book, in great demand, which prompted researcher Juan Hirzel to edit a more complete and updated version. The INIA specialist, author of most of the chapters, mentioned that a total of 1,250 copies were printed, as a result of the contributions of 11 private companies, which together are delivering 960 units to their farmers.
Hirzel explained that the book addresses such important topics as the fertilization of bread wheat, candeal wheat, corn, oats, rice, beans, potatoes, beets, industrial chicory, quinoa and canola, with fertilization recommendations for each of them, and results of soil analysis in different types of soil and production scenarios. “It also includes chapters related to the use of organic amendments as a source of fertilization in crops, nutrient losses and environmental effects of the use of fertilizers and organic amendments, and photographs of nutritional deficiencies and excesses in crops”, he highlighted.
Finally, the researcher was hopeful “that this technological tool, the result of our work at INIA, will be useful for farmers, professionals, students and teachers associated with agriculture.”
