Second Edition of International Progressive Theater Festival Inaugurated in Venezuela with 16 Participating Countries Including Mexico

Caracas, Jun 8 (EFE).- Venezuela inaugurated this Thursday the second edition of the International Progressive Theater Festival, in which groups from 16 invited countries participate, including Mexico, honored on this occasion, informed the Minister of Culture, Ernesto Villegas .

“Today, June 8, the second International Festival of Progressive Theater Venezuela 2023 was inaugurated, as part of the activities directed by President Nicolás Maduro to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Naval Battle of Lake Maracaibo,” said the official on Twitter. .

The opening ceremony took place at the National Theater in Caracas, where the play “El corrido del rey Lear” by Mexican director Fernando Bonilla was presented, Villegas said.

The piece, by the Mexican theater group Puño de Tierra, is a black comedy that tells the story of a theater actor who, affected by old age, has trouble learning the text of the play “King Lear” by William Shakespeare.

In a press release, the Ministry of Culture recalled that the festival will run until June 18, and that the program includes 20 international and 32 national shows in Caracas, as well as a dozen foreign works and twenty local ones that will make a tour through several of the 23 states of the country.

In this “theatrical festival”, in addition to Mexico, “artistic groups” from Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Cuba, Italy, Portugal, Peru, Ecuador, Spain, Chile, Uruguay, Russia, Burkina Faso and Egypt participate.

This second edition has two more countries compared to the previous one, held between the end of July and the beginning of August of last year, an event that brought together guests from 14 countries, including Colombia, “special guest country”, as indicated by the Culture Portfolio. EFE
