Sebastian Vettel to leave Ferrari

Sebastian Vettel will leave Ferrari at the end of the 2020 season. The Italian Formula 1 team has confirmed this. The German has never been able to realize his dream of winning a title with “La Scuderia”.

No agreement found

The departure of quadruple Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel of the Ferrari team at the end of the year has been confirmed. The 32-year-old German driver’s contract will not be renewed at the end of the season. Vettel will therefore leave the “Scuderia” after six years behind the wheel of the red racing car for an as yet unknown future. The two parties failed to agree on a new contract.

Defeated by the Mercedes

Until then, Vettel never managed to fulfill his dream of matching his sacred idol Michael Schumacher at the wheel of a Ferrari. Last season, he had to settle for a disappointing fifth place in the World Championship and had to admit that he was largely defeated by the Mercedes. Even his teammate but rival, Charles Leclec had finished ahead of him. The 22-year-old Monegasque had already signed a contract extension last Christmas until the end of 2024. Leclerc was clearly designated as the team’s No. 1 hope for the short and medium term, while Vettel hadn’t received only a proposal to extend a season.

Domiciled in Switzerland

For Vettel, who lives in the canton of Thurgau, it was an affront even if the stable manager, Mattia Binotto, had always said that he would gladly keep the German among his two pilots. But no doubt that a reduction in wages was very badly received by the quadruple world champion.

Vettel had won his four world titles between 2010 and 2013. He was almost unbeatable behind the wheel of the Red Bull. With Ferrari, he was far from enjoying the same success. In 2017, he signed a new three-season contract. So he still has a slim chance of winning the title this year, but with the dominance of Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes, it would be a monumental feat.

Who will replace him?

Rumors are rife about the name of Sebastian Vettel’s replacement at Ferrari. That of six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who is coming to the end of his contract with Mercedes at the end of the season, has been put forward, but the Briton has suggested that he will stay with Mercedes. Also mentioned are the names of the Australian Daniel Ricciardo, currently with Renault, the Spaniard Carlos Sainz (McLaren) and the Italian Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa-Romeo).

The announcement comes when the 2020 F1 World Championship has not yet started due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the date of the first race still uncertain.
