The incident, which occurred on April 15 around 12:30 a.m. in the Coal Harbour area, has left the victim, identified as Stephanie, with physical and emotional scars.

The Attack: A Fight for Survival

Stephanie, who shared her experience on social media, described the assault as a terrifying ordeal. She recounted how a man, later identified as Peterhans Jalo nungu, allegedly approached and attacked her without provocation.

According to Stephanie, I was on the seawall just walking and I think this guy said something to me and I honest to god can’t remember what he said. She turned to see a man on a grass hill, who then just ran at me to attack me.

Stephanie described the attacker’s demeanor as predatory,stating,I’ve honest to god have never seen anything like that where it just felt like he was a predator and I was prey.

  • First Assault: The man allegedly grabbed Stephanie by the back of her jacket and slammed her to the ground. With that first assault, I was, one, stunned but also like, ‘Oh my god’ and I just started fighting and screaming, she said.
  • Second Assault: After managing to escape and call 911, the man allegedly caught up to her again, smashing her phone on the ground. He was taking great joy in hurting me, Stephanie recalled. I just knew this person was not OK. There’s no way to ration or reason with them. Just fight.
  • Third Assault: The third encounter was the most brutal, with the man allegedly punching Stephanie multiple times in the head, causing her to briefly lose consciousness. I just kept telling myself to get up, get up, she said.

Despite her injuries, Stephanie managed to fight back and escape each time.

Stephanie’s ordeal came to an end when she encountered a group of people who turned out to be undercover police officers. thankfully,I encountered a group of people, she said. They actually happened to be a group of undercover plain-clothed cops. The officers apprehended the man, and Stephanie received medical attention for her injuries, which included a broken nose, cuts, and bruises.

She expressed gratitude for the assistance she received from first responders, including police, nurses, doctors, and the victim services unit. I’m very lucky, she said.

Peterhans Jalo Nungu has been charged with assault causing bodily harm. He was initially taken into custody following the incident. Sgt. Steve Addison of the Vancouver Police Department stated that Nungu was released on bail and taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. Upon release, he was taken to hospital for a mental health evaluation, Addison said. When suitable for release from hospital, he will be subject to house arrest. Nungu’s next court appearance is scheduled for May 20.

Nungu is also facing charges from a separate incident in Surrey on April 13, including assaulting a peace officer and uttering threats.
