Seattle Braces for Early Summer Heatwave: Temperatures to Soar
Record Highs Expected
Seattle is set to experience an early summer heatwave, with temperatures expected to climb considerably over the coming days. The Korea Meteorological Management forecasts that the highest daytime temperature in Seattle will reach 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) on the 8th and remain near 85 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday.
The unseasonably warm weather is predicted to begin this weekend, with temperatures reaching 78 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday and 79 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday. From Sunday, the temperature will be much higher than the average year in Seattle,
officials stated.
The Science Behind the Heat
This surge in temperature is attributed to a strong high-pressure system forming off the Pacific coast. Pelton Meteorologist explained, On Sunday, this high pressure will put warm air on the head like a dome.
This phenomenon traps warm air over the region, leading to the expected high temperatures.
Water Safety Concerns
With the anticipated heat, authorities are urging caution for those planning water activities. Despite the warm air, water temperatures remain low, posing a risk of cold shock.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the water temperature of the Puget Sound sea area is currently 50 to 52 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 11 degrees celsius).River temperatures range from 46 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit (8 to 15 degrees Celsius),and lake surface water temperatures are around 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius).
Pelton Meteorologist warned, Even though the temperature is high, the water is still cold, so there is a high risk of ‘Cold Shock’.
He emphasized the importance of wearing life jackets to mitigate this risk.
Staying Safe in the Heat
The Korea Meteorological Administration and local media have issued guidelines to help residents stay safe during the heatwave. These include:
- Sufficient moisture intake
- Refraining from prolonged exposure to sunlight
- Using sunscreen
- Consuming cool snacks
