Season 19 of “Grey’s Anatomy” on ABC: Why was Seattle Grace renamed Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital?

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ returns with its elegant Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital on ABC. However, there are a couple of tweaks this time around. Viewers know they may be seeing less of one of their favorite characters, Meredith Gray. One of the longest-running medical drama series in the genre’s history, “Grey’s Anatomy” has been well received by critics for much of its run and has been included in the year-end Top 10 by various critics. Since its inception, the show has been described by the media as a television “phenomenon” or a “giant”, due to its longevity and massive ratings.

Regardless, season 19 is coming to TV screens soon, but first, let’s take a trip down the memorial and revisit the time when Seattle Grace was renamed Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital. Read on to find out exactly why this happened.

Remember Derek’s childhood best friend, Mark Sloan, who earned the nickname “McSteamy” in Season 2 for his good looks and internship charm? (You probably remember him best as Nate Jacob’s father from “Euphoria” now.) He was the new plastic surgery assistant at Seattle Grace Hospital. “Not Another Teen Movie” actress Chyler Leigh played Lexie Gray, a new intern and sister of Meredith on the series.

Mark and Lexie start a relationship and have had their fair share of ups and downs, as well as drama. However, their romance ends in tragedy in the season 8 finale, when Mark, Lexie, Derek, Meredith, Cristina and Arizona are involved in a plane crash while on their way to Boise, Idaho, to operate on two. Siamese twins.

The incident shows Lexie crushed under the rubble. After unsuccessfully trying to save her, Mark holds a dying Lexie by the hand and tells her that he has always loved her and will always love her. He and the remaining victims of the accident get stuck in the woods, mourning Lexie and struggling to survive. Unfortunately, he dies and in season 9, the remaining surgeons are rescued from the desert days later and Lexie’s body is returned to Seattle. Still devastated by Lexie’s death, Mark tells his protege Jackson, “When you love someone, tell them.” Mark felt he didn’t tell Lexie that he loved her enough when she was alive and eventually she dies because she doesn’t recover from the coma.

After Mark’s death, flashbacks of various moments in his life are shown. One of them at Callie and Arizona’s wedding. At the end of his congratulatory speech, Mark declares that Lexie was the only one, his true partner, with whom he wanted to grow old and dance at his niece’s wedding.

When the remaining plane crash survivors pool the compensation money to buy Seattle Grace Mercy West, they agree to rename it “Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital” in honor of Lexie and Mark, and that’s how Seattle Grace was renamed.

COMMERCIAL

According to TV Line, after their death, creator Shonda Rhimes reflected on the couple’s love story: “… He [Mark] and Lexie manage to be together somehow. Her love is still true. ”

Grey’s Anatomy, which follows the personal and professional lives of doctors at Seattle’s Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital, returns for season 19 on Thursday, October 6, 2022.
