In North Rhine-Westphalia, investigators were involved in a nationwide operation against 56 suspects on suspicion of possession and distribution of child pornography. Police searched 41 houses and apartments, as the public prosecutor in Cologne announced on Thursday. Arrest warrants were not carried out, but individual accused had already confessed. The investigators secured more than 330 data carriers.

“The search measures are all directed against suspects who are alleged to have obtained child pornography content for themselves or others primarily via social networks,” said the Cologne public prosecutor. The central and contact point Cybercrime North Rhine-Westphalia (ZAC NRW), which initiated the concerted action, is located at the authority. A few women are among the accused, said the public prosecutor’s office, Ulrich Bremer.

The police struck in large cities and small towns. Among others they were in Dortmund, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen, Grevenbroich, Gütersloh, Hamm, Hövelhof, Kerpen, Krefeld, Minden, Oberhausen, Schermbeck, Solingen and Wuppertal present. In the process, clues for further criminal offenses were discovered – for example for unauthorized possession of firearms.
–
According to the information, the searches were mainly based on information from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) from the USA. The organization receives reports on crimes against children and forwards them to the responsible authorities. According to the investigators, the investigation group “Berg” from Cologne and the investigative commission “Rose” from Münster were not the starting point this time. Both units are busy clearing up large abuse complexes: Bergisch Gladbach and Münster.

North Rhine-Westphalia has been shaken by several cases of abuse in recent years. The places Lügde, Bergisch Gladbach and Münster have meanwhile burned themselves into the collective memory. During raids, gigantic amounts of data with images of serious child sexual abuse were seized. More and more cases are ending up in court as a result. The work of the authorities is complicated, however, because many perpetrators hide behind pseudonyms in chats and forums and apparently have no concern of being exposed.

The ZAC NRW, which has meanwhile started work, is trying, among other things, to assign real names to the pseudonyms on the Internet. Under the leadership of the cybercrime unit, there were extensive searches in NRW at the beginning of October. At that time, too, information from foreign authorities and organizations was followed up.
