Search for missing people from Philippines plane crash halted, death toll rises to 50 | Abroad

All 96 people on board the military plane of the Philippine army that crashed on the island of Jolo on Sunday have been found. General Cirilito Sobejana reported this on Monday. A total of 50 people died, including three civilians who were not on the plane. That is five more than the number reported on Sunday. 49 soldiers and four civilians were injured.

The military plane, a C-130, crashed on landing at Jolo island’s airport on Sunday. “We pray that we can save more lives,” Sobejana said shortly after the accident. According to the general, the plane missed the runway and crashed while attempting a go-around.

A thick plume of black smoke rose over the houses near the crash site. Photos from local media show the wreckage of the plane, which went up in flames.

Authorities are currently assuming an accident. There is no evidence of an attack. According to the Philippine army, the aircraft was in “very good condition”. The crashed plane was originally from the US. This year, the United States Air Force gave two Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft to the Philippines as part of military support to that country.

Many of the passengers recently completed basic military training and have been deployed to the island as part of a joint task force fighting terrorism in the region. The military has a strong presence in the southern Philippines, where militant groups are active, including the Muslim Abu Sayyaf group, which carries out kidnappings for ransom.

Philippine Defense Minister Delfin Lorenzana has called for a full investigation once the rescue and recovery operation is complete.
