Philipsburg, Montana – April 15, 2024 – Authorities are intensifying the search for lloyd Brown, 45, the suspect in the fatal shooting at the Philipsburg American Legion on saturday night, April 13th, which left three men dead: james Joseph “Jim” Bailey, 78; Patrick “Paddy” O’Connell, 67; and Robert “Bob” Allen, 66. Montana Attorney General Austin knudsen confirmed Sunday that Brown is known to local law enforcement and is believed to have known at least some of the victims, given his proximity to the bar. A $7,500 reward is being offered for information leading to his capture.
Suspect’s Background and Military service
Lloyd brown served in the U.S. Army as an armor crewman from 2001 to 2005, including a deployment to Iraq from early 2004 to March 2005, according to Lt.Col. Ruth Castro, an Army spokesperson. He later joined the Montana National Guard, serving from 2006 until his departure in March 2009 at the rank of sergeant. Investigators are currently searching areas in Granite County, Montana, where Brown frequented as a child, including wooded areas used for hunting and camping.
Mental Health Concerns Raised by Family
Brown’s niece,Clare Boyle, has publicly stated that her uncle has struggled with mental illness for years, and that family members repeatedly attempted to secure him help. In a Facebook message, Boyle described Brown as “a sick man who doesn’t know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn’t know where or when he is either.” this information raises questions about access to mental healthcare resources in rural Montana and the challenges faced by families navigating such situations.
Search Developments and Public Appeal
Law enforcement released surveillance footage showing Brown shortly after the shooting, appearing barefoot and wearing minimal clothing.Though, authorities now believe brown abandoned his initial escape vehicle and stole another, a white vehicle, containing camping gear, shoes, and clothing, suggesting he may now be properly clothed. The last confirmed sighting of Brown was Friday afternoon, complicated by the presence of multiple white vehicles in the area.
Attorney General Knudsen urged Montanans to remain vigilant. “This is still Montana. Montanans know how to take care of themselves. But please,if you have any sightings, call 911,” he stated. The Philipsburg American Legion,a cornerstone of the small community of approximately 800 residents, remains closed as the investigation continues. Granite County Sheriff’s Office is leading the ground search, coordinating with state and federal agencies.
