Borelli‘s two Goals Propel Scranton Women’s Soccer to 2-1 Victory Over Farmingdale State
SCRANTON, PA – A brace from forward Maria Borelli powered the University of Scranton women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Farmingdale State College on Saturday afternoon. Borelli’s two goals, including the game-winner, lifted the Royals to another victory as they continue their early-season schedule.
The win showcases Scranton’s offensive prowess and resilience, solidifying their position as a team to watch in the Landmark Conference. This result is notably significant as the Royals navigate a challenging non-conference schedule designed to prepare them for league play. The team will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming mid-week matchup.
Scranton struck first in the 27th minute when Borelli found the back of the net, giving the Royals a 1-0 advantage. The Rams responded just over three minutes later,leveling the score at 1-1 thanks to a goal from Abigail Chest,assisted by Alyse Rivera in the 53rd minute.
However, Scranton wasted no time regaining the lead. A mere 30 seconds after Farmingdale State’s equalizer, Borelli scored her second goal of the day – and fourth of the season – finishing a perfectly placed ball over the Rams’ back line from Aileen Carr. The Royals held firm defensively for the remainder of the match, securing the 2-1 victory.
Scranton dominated the offensive statistics, recording 24 shots, with 11 on target, compared to Farmingdale State’s five shots, three of which were on goal. The Royals also earned nine corner kicks to the Rams’ one. Scranton’s goalkeepers recorded two saves, while Farmingdale State’s goalkeeper tallied nine.
The University of scranton women’s soccer team will return to action on Wednesday, september 24, traveling to face Misericordia University in a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Dallas, Pennsylvania.
