Scottie Scheffler has once again demonstrated his dominance in professional golf, securing his second major championship of the year. This victory marks his 11th consecutive win when holding a 54-hole lead,a testament to his consistent performance on the course.
Scheffler’s remarkable run of form since February 2022 has seen him achieve 20 worldwide victories. His latest triumph follows a pattern of converting third-round leads into final-round wins, a feat he has now accomplished 11 times in a row. This year, Scheffler joins Xander Schauffele, who also won two majors in the previous year, in achieving the distinction of winning multiple major championships within a single season.
Xander Schauffele, who finished tied for seventh, commented on Scheffler’s remarkable play, drawing parallels to Tiger Woods’ era of dominance. “I don’t think we thought the golfing world would see someone as dominant as Tiger come through so soon, and here’s Scottie sort of taking that throne of dominance,” schauffele stated. He further elaborated on Scheffler’s sustained excellence, noting, “You can’t even say he’s on a run. He’s just been killing it for over two years now. He’s a tough man to beat, and when you see his name up on the leaderboard, it sucks for us.”
The tournament also saw a notable performance from English, who navigated personal challenges to secure a runner-up finish. His caddie of eight years was unable to attend due to a past legal issue, requiring English to work with a replacement caddie for the second consecutive week. Despite these circumstances, English delivered a strong performance, shooting a 66 and finishing as the runner-up in a major for the second time this year, both times to Scheffler. This performance bolsters his prospects for the upcoming ryder Cup in September.
English acknowledged Scheffler’s superiority, stating, “The only guy to beat me at the PGA and this week. I’m playing some good golf. I wasn’t playing professional golf when Tiger was at his peak. But it’s pretty incredible, just how good of a front-runner he is.”
A lighthearted moment occurred when Scheffler’s 15-month-old son, Bennett, attempted to join his father on the 18th green, only to stumble on a slope.
Other notable finishers included Li Haotong of China, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Wyndham Clark, who all tied for fourth place.Li’s performance secured him a spot in next year’s Masters.
rory McIlroy, playing on home soil, received a strong reception from the crowd. Despite needing a fast start, he remained even par through 12 holes and never got closer than five shots to the lead. He concluded the tournament with a 69, tying for seventh. “I wish I had have been closer to Scottie going into today and been able to make a real push,” mcilroy commented. “But he’s been on a different level all week and he’s been on a different level for the last two years to the rest of us. He is the bar that we’re all trying to get to at this point.” He added, “But for me to be in front of everyone here at home and to get that reception up the last, absolutely incredible. I’ll remember that for a long time.”
Corey Conners, the sole canadian competitor to make the cut, finished tied for 10th after shooting his second consecutive 5-under 66.
