Scotland is the first to make tampons and pads free

In Scotland, women will soon no longer have to pay for sanitary pads and tampons, among other things. On Tuesday evening, parliament unanimously approved a law in the fight against menstrual poverty.

The new law means that menstrual products such as sanitary pads and tampons must be available free of charge to everyone who needs them. Menstrual poverty occurs in women and girls who cannot afford hygiene products due to a lack of money.

Schools and universities must also offer certain products free of charge. The government can also direct government agencies to provide, for example, tampons and sanitary towels.

Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Twitter after the vote that she is ‘proud’ of the ‘groundbreaking legislation that makes Scotland the first country in the world to provide free menstrual products’. She called it “important policies for women and girls.”

New Zealand made from June This year’s period products are already free for girls in high school.
