On April 14, the ship hit an iceberg. The ship only had 20 lifeboats with a carrying capacity of 1,178 people, or about half of the number of passengers on board.

On April 15, the Titanic sank, killing about 1,500 of the 2,224 on board.
The wreck of the Titanic, located 13,000 feet below the surface of the Atlantic ocean, was discovered in September 1985, and since then researchers and scientists have been trying to preserve and study what remains of the 880-foot ship.
The shipwreck has become a coral reef for many organisms. Titanic is now covered by rusticles, a type of bacteria that slowly gnaws at the wreckage of the ship, now, a number of masts have collapsed due to the presence of these organisms.
Scientists predict that most shipwrecks will be completely eroded by 2030, which means time to document the ecosystem is running out.
Efforts to preserve the wreck are ongoing. In 2012, the wreck of the Titanic became a UNESCO historic site.
OceanGate Expeditions explores the wreck each year in a hurry, studying the ecosystem before it is beyond recognition. The 2022 Titanic Survey Expedition will consist of five excursions over eight days.
