Chronic rhinosinusitis (nasal congestion with headaches) may be associated with changes in brain activity.

As writes Science Alert, scientists from Harvard Medical School, Washington University and California University (USA) conducted a study involving 44 people, half of whom were a control group with chronic rhinosinusitis, and the same – an experimental group, whose members did not suffer from this disease.

Participants were analyzed by MRI of blood flow in their brains and neuronal activity.

Otolaryngologist Aria Jafari explained that patients with sinusitis are in no hurry to seek help from specialists, but the disease is gradually affecting their interaction with the world. It becomes difficult for a person to think, he sleeps badly, his quality of life deteriorates.

During the study, it became clear that those patients who suffered from sinus inflammation had a lower functional connection in the fronto-parietal part of the brain, which is responsible for concentrating while solving problems. They also have such dysfunctions as mind wandering, low functional connectivity, and low social behavior.

The most pronounced differences were observed in people with severe nasal congestion. But there were no significant signs of cognitive decline in testing.

The sensations of decreased attention, difficulty concentrating, or sleep disturbances experienced by a person with sinus inflammation may be due to small changes in the way the areas of the brain that control these functions interact with each other.

According to researcher Christina Simonyan, modern methods of treating this ailment can last for several years, while the severity of the disease can manifest itself cyclically. Doctors are fighting this problem through operations, but they do not guarantee that it will definitely not return.

As reported OBOZREVATEL, regular consumption of caffeine, the most popular psychoactive substance in the world, can change the structure of the brainhowever, the effect is temporary.
