The most common cases of coronavirus and death from it are people with mental disorders.
Scientists from the University of Manchester in the UK have found that people with mental disorders are five times more likely to get sick and die from the coronavirus. Writes about it Molecular Psychiatry.
The study analyzed data from 1,925 people with schizophrenia or other mental disorders, 1,483 people with bipolar disorder, and 41,448 people with depressive disorder.
Among them, 16,282 people tested positive for COVID-19, 2,885 were hospitalized, and 1,081 died.
As a result, it turned out that for people with mental disorders, the risk of death from COVID-19 was 4.84 times higher than for others.
People with bipolar disorder had a 3.76 higher risk of dying from COVID-19 and 1.99 higher risk for people with depressive disorder.
It is also known that the percentage of hospitalizations among people with mental or bipolar disorders was 35.8 and 37.3%, respectively, compared with 16.6% among people without such diseases.
In addition, it is known that more than half of people with psychotic disorders – 52.6% – have died. Among those who did not have serious mental illness, this percentage was 37.5%.
