Scientists Find New Organs in the Human Body, Here’s What It Looks Like

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Recently, scientists discovered a body part that had never been recognized before. This body part is on the inside of the face.

This part is known to be a layer of muscle in the masseter, the organ that lifts the lower jaw and is essential for chewing. The masseter muscle has two layers: deep and superficial.

This was revealed in a study published last December 2 in a scientific journal, as quoted by CNBC Indonesia, Sunday (12/26/2021).

“Some historical texts mention the possibility of a third layer as well, but they are very inconsistent with the position.” write a report in the journal, quoted by LiveScience.

The scientists then examined whether the protruding jaw muscles had a hidden super-deep layer, as historical texts suggest.

They dissected 12 heads of human corpses preserved in formaldehyde and took CT scans of 16 ‘fresh’ corpses as well as reviewed MRI scans of living subjects.

Then, they identified the three anatomically distinct layers of the masseter muscle. This deep layer extends from the zygomatic process to the bony projections that form part of the cheekbones.

In addition, it can be felt right in front of the ear to the coronoid process of a triangular projection on the lower jawbone.

“This interior of the masseter muscle is clearly distinguishable from the other two layers in terms of pathway and function,” said Szilivia Mezey, first author of the discovery.

In the journal, the scientists proposed that the newly discovered muscle layer be named “Musculus masseter pars coronidea” which means “coronoid part of masseter”.
