This conclusion was made by scientists at the University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio (USA), having analyzed the clinical picture of the disease of children and adolescents with coronavirus for the period from January 24 to May 14, 2020. The researchers report is published on the EClinicalMedicine portal of the British medical journal Lancet.

Promising statistics

Summarizing the data provided by colleagues from clinics of several continents, as well as relying on their own statistics, the researchers drew attention to the fact that in about 19% of children with coronavirus, the disease was asymptomatic.

In 21% of patients traces of damage to lung tissue were found, 5.6% of patients suffered from concomitant infectious diseases such as flu and colds. Due to a serious condition, 3.3% of infected COVID-19 were admitted to intensive care units. Of all 7 780 children examined, 7 died.

“During the study of the condition of children who confirmed the presence of coronavirus, we focused on the intricacies of the clinical picture of the disease, refined and detailed the results of laboratory research methods, sought to give the most accurate picture of the course of this insidious infectious disease,” said the lead author of the study, assistant professor of pediatrics University of Texas Alvaro Moreira.

As Moreira clarifies, scientists paid great attention to treating patients, they carefully monitored the therapeutic effect of drugs prescribed for the sick.

A group of patients was also identified whose management and treatment met the criteria of the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the report says.

The clinical picture of patients with coronavirus was dominated, as in adults, by fever and cough, noted in the work. They were found, respectively, in 59% and 56% of children.

In 233 children out of the total number of examined, frequent colds were observed in the anamnesis, in 152 – a weak immune system, heart and respiratory diseases were found.

“Although we heard about severe forms of coronavirus in children, according to our research, such cases were extremely rare,” the scientist says.

Severe complications were present

“In children with a systemic inflammatory process, the number of lymphocytes in the blood decreased significantly – up to 11%, while in children with coronavirus with an asymptomatic course of the disease there were 41%, which indicates a significant decrease in immunity in the first group,” says Moreira .

In 9 patients, renal failure was observed, the same amount was with liver failure.

Mechanical ventilation was needed in 42 patients.

Thus, the study showed that the body of children and adolescents is much more resistant to the aggressive effects of coronavirus, the scientist believes. He is convinced that further study of the opposition of COVID-19 to the defenses of the body of children will reveal features that may help develop therapeutic mechanisms to help adults.
