In other words, our planet’s water cycle covers the interior of the Earth. TZ – the boundary layer separating the upper and lower mantle of the Earth, is located at a depth of between 410 and 660 kilometers.

The research team analyzed a rare diamond from Botswana, Africa, which forms on the border between the transition zone and the lower mantle.

Using Raman spectroscopy and FTIR spectrometry, the study revealed that the stone contained many ringwoodite inclusions.

The mineral olivine ringwoodite forms only under extreme pressure deep in the mantle.

Furthermore, olivine, which makes up about 70 percent of the Earth’s upper mantle and is also called peridot, can take many different forms depending on the depth at which it is found.

Ringwoodite is famous for being able to contain water in the form of hydroxide ions (oxygen and hydrogen atoms bonded together) in its structure.

“Sinking plates also carry deep-sea sediments within the Earth. These sediments can contain large amounts of water and CO2. But until now it was unclear how much went into the transition zone in the more stable hydrate and carbonate form. minerals – and therefore it is not even clear whether large quantities of water are actually stored there, ”explained Prof. Frank Brenker of the Geosciences Institute of the Goethe University in Frankfurt, who was part of the study.

Next, the research team determined that the chemical composition of the diamonds they analyzed was almost exactly the same as that of nearly all mantle rock fragments found in basalts across our planet.

“In this study, we have shown that the transition zone is not a dry sponge, but contains a fairly large amount of water. This also brings us one step closer to Jules Verne’s idea of ​​an ocean within the Earth.” , concluded prof. . Frank Brenker.

Hydrated ringwoodite was first detected in Brazilian transition zone diamonds in early 2014 in a study also followed by Brenker.

However, the exact chemical composition of the rock has not been determined due to its small size.

The presence of an important 1.5 cm diamond from Botswana is the final confirmation of the preliminary results of 2014.
