Before being taken into custody, the Russian was in charge of the cumulative ammunition department at the private Bulgarian arms company Arsenal.
The case concerns the disclosure of confidential information, several more people are involved in it.
Monitor.bg writes with reference to the Ministry of Internal Affairs that together with the scientist, his wife Olga and son Benjamin were detained and arrested. All of them are citizens of Lithuania, Zonenko’s wife also worked at Arsenal.
The Zonenko family was stopped at a checkpoint on the border with Greece after Arsenal discovered the missing prototypes and documents regarding an innovative development. Items and documents with confidential information were found in the scientist’s car.
Zonenko was born in Tatarstan in the Russian Federation in 1961. He defended his thesis related to the safety of nuclear reactors.
In the period from February 2014 to April 2015, a series of explosions thundered at five Bulgarian arms factories. In particular, on February 28, 2014, as a result of the explosion of the Arsenal complex in the city of Kazanlak, a gunpowder workshop was partially destroyed, as a result of which one person died. The incidents were associated with the activities of the Russian GRU.
