Science Says Sleeping on Your Left Side May Boost Brain & Body Health
New York, NY – New research indicates that sleeping on your left side may offer significant health benefits, including improved lymphatic drainage in the central nervous system and enhanced circulation. A study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, conducted by Stony Brook University and the University of Rochester, found that this position aids in the removal of waste products from the brain, such as beta-amyloid deposits, which are linked to neurological harm.
Beyond brain health, sleeping on the left side facilitates the elimination of excess proteins, vitamins, and fats. It also improves blood flow by preventing obstruction of the aorta artery and keeping the inferior vena cava unobstructed, allowing for easier return of blood to the heart.
“When you sleep on your left side, the inferior vena cava remains free, with no organ pressing on it, so blood returns more easily from the rest of the body to the heart,” explained Christopher Winter, from Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, USA.
The position also supports digestive function, as the natural tilt of the stomach and intestines on the left side allows for easier food passage. Moreover, it can relieve spinal pressure and reduce facial swelling.
Experts also recommend left-side sleeping for pregnant women, as it prevents the baby from compressing the vena cava, ensuring optimal blood flow and nutrient delivery to the placenta.
