Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has encouraged the citizens to view the Christmas holidays as a festival, despite all restrictions, to celebrate and to recharge their batteries.
“Despite Corona, Christmas remains the festival of love, the festival of the family. Even if we cannot get together with everyone this year,” said the head of government in her Christmas address. At the same time, the Prime Minister appealed to people to minimize contacts as much as possible despite the easing during the holidays – even if it was difficult. After the tough restrictions in spring, the country initially got through the summer well. However, the high numbers of infections since November have made it necessary to tighten the restrictions in everyday life and in public life again. Among other things, Schwesig had been criticized for the most recent quarantine regulation for travelers returning from so-called corona hotspots with a high incidence value.

The renewed closure of shops and restaurants is also controversial. “You can rely on us to do everything we can to protect people’s health, support the economy and secure jobs,” assured the head of government. She wished all sick people a speedy recovery. Her thoughts are with those who have lost a loved one. Schwesig also thanked the nurses and doctors for their services. Appreciation for other professions has also grown, such as for salespeople in health departments. She also said she was confident that the vaccines would help defeat the coronavirus. “We can get out of the pandemic step by step.” The first vaccinations against the corona virus are to begin in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania immediately after the holidays.
