German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said today that he has seen progress in talks to purchase liquefied natural gas and diesel from the UAE, as Germany, which until recently relied heavily on Russian gas imports, seeks to diversify its energy supply since Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
Schultz, who is on a two-day tour of the Gulf region, did not give details about the talks with the UAE, but told reporters: “We need to make sure that global LNG production has advanced to the point where the large existing demand can be met without the need to resort to the existing production capacity in Russia. “
Schultz held talks in Jeddah with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and will travel to Qatar later today.
