Schools – Trier – Authority: So far no evidence of action by mask opponents – education

Trier / Mainz (dpa / lrs) – In Rhineland-Palatinate, there is so far no evidence of a possible action by mask opponents in school children. “We have not yet received any feedback that anyone has tried to address students in any way,” said the spokeswoman for the supervisory and service directorate (ADD) in Trier on Monday. Last week, the authority had informed schools in the country of a possible nationwide action on Monday, in which “lateral thinking” parents supposedly planned to address children and their relatives on the way to school and to hand them ineffective, wide-meshed masks.

It was correct to inform, said the spokeswoman. After all, it is better to be prepared for possible things, even if nothing happens then. It is urgently necessary to adhere to the applicable hygiene regulations in schools. In Rhineland-Palatinate, it is compulsory to wear a mask in class 5 and up.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, 766 of 521,000 students were most recently (as of November 6) proven to be infected with the coronavirus. There are suspected cases in 9454 students. According to ADD, there are 116 cases of infection and 817 suspected cases of teachers in the statistics for a total of around 41,000 teachers. Six schools are completely closed for face-to-face teaching, 157 partially closed.

The Philologists’ Association of Rhineland-Palatinate called for more transparency in the numbers for new infections in schools on Monday. These would have to be published daily on the website of the Ministry of Education or the ADD. “It is high time that the public was informed daily about the number of new infections in schools,” said the association’s chairwoman Cornelia Schwartz. Only then can there be appropriate discussions about how to deal with the pandemic.
