Potsdam (dpa) – Brandenburg’s Education Minister Britta Ernst (SPD) has referred to the upcoming deliberations in the next few days in view of the debate about the other corona rules in schools. “How things will continue in January will have to be weighed up again in the coming week against the background of the then known infection process,” said the future President of the Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) on Thursday upon request. The KMK is fundamentally in favor of schools being open because all children have the right to education and social participation. But there must always be an overall consideration, especially with health protection.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the country leaders will discuss next Tuesday on how to proceed in the pandemic after the lockdown, which will initially run until January 10th. There are more and more indications that the measures will be extended in view of the persistently high corona numbers. The education ministers of the federal states want to coordinate the school issue one day before the chancellor’s talk with the heads of government.

Baden-Württemberg’s minister of education, Susanne Eisenmann (CDU), had reiterated her demand in the “Bild” newspaper that kindergartens and elementary schools open again from January 11th. Britta Ernst will officially take over the presidency from the Rhineland-Palatinate Education Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) on January 14th. Ernst wants to place its chairmanship under the topic of “Teaching and learning and good teaching in the times of digital transformation”.
