Magdeburg (dpa / sa) – In Saxony-Anhalt’s schools, the French history teacher Samuel Paty, who was killed two weeks ago, is to be remembered on Monday with a minute’s silence. At 11.15 a.m., classes should rest for a minute in his honor, the Ministry of Education in Magdeburg announced on Saturday. The French Minister of Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, asked all governments in Europe to do this. “I expressly agree to this request and call on our schools to use this commemoration to send a strong joint signal for compassion, solidarity and our free-democratic values,” said Saxony-Anhalt’s Education Minister Marco Tullner (CDU) according to the announcement.

The 47-year-old Paty was beheaded by an Islamist in a Paris suburb on October 16 for showing caricatures of Mohammed in class on the subject of freedom of expression. “The horrific attack was directed against our European values such as peace, freedom, democracy, freedom of opinion and freedom of religion, which are also conveyed and lived by our teachers in their daily work,” said Tullner. “I am grateful that our teachers take on this daily task and take on the challenges associated with it. Our schools must continue to be preserved as places of education and democratic coexistence.”
