Schools – Hamburg – Hamburg will invest more than 200 million in school construction in 2020

Hamburg (dpa / lno) – In view of the increasing number of schoolchildren, Hamburg invested almost 204 million euros in school construction in 2020. Further investments of more than 600 million euros are planned by 2022, according to a small request from SPD MP Kazim Abaci to the Senate.

“The planned investments of the Senate are an encouragement, because they illustrate the long-term strategy of the school senator to strengthen our educational institutions,” he told the German press agency.

According to the Senate, more than 40,000 additional children and young people are expected to attend schools in Hamburg by 2030. 44 new schools are to be built and 123 locations are to be expanded. From 2011 to 2019, 3.3 billion euros were invested in the construction of modern school buildings as well as renovation and repair.

Since then, Abaci said the performance of the Hamburg students has demonstrably improved. “But in order to be able to maintain the level that has been achieved, massive investments in the infrastructure are required.” A look at the figures shows that the focus is not only on new buildings. “In the current school year, the Senate is investing 56.8 million euros in primary schools in Hamburg, 88.7 million euros in district schools and 40.6 million euros in high schools.”

In the coming school year 2021/22, 233.3 million euros will be spent on replacement buildings, extensions and renovations at 42 primary schools. “219.6 million euros go to 20 district schools and 65.8 million euros go to 13 grammar schools,” said the school policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group. These are impressive sums for renovations alone.

The high investments in school construction also served as an economic and investment impetus and were thus “also a contribution to overcoming the economic consequences of the Corona crisis,” he said.
