Scholz: Germany will not change position on weapons

Scholz and Stoltenberg

The new German government will adhere to a policy of refusing to supply lethal weapons.

Germany will not change its decision to ban arms exports, in particular to Ukraine. About this on Tuesday, January 18, declared Chancellor Olaf Scholz after meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

“Over the years, the German government has followed a specific strategy, and this strategy is about not exporting lethal weapons. We did not change this strategy when we came to power and began to exercise powers,” Scholz said.

He clarified that Germany adheres to this policy at all meetings with Russia on security guarantees.

“Now we have to think about how to ensure that the current escalation stops, and how we can carry it out, so that the territorial integrity of Ukraine is not in any way threatened, and that there will be no military aggression against Ukraine and there will be no other possibilities and means when someone will try to achieve political change through the use of force,” Scholz said.

Recall that yesterday the issue of arms supplies discussed by the Foreign Ministers of Ukraine and Germany Dmitry Kuleba and Annalena Berbock. The Ukrainian minister said that the talks would continue, the German minister said that Berlin’s position remains unchanged.
