Schetyna: raises for MPs to political suicide of the opposition

  • Schetyna said that in his opinion the Civic Platform should apologize to Poles for supporting the PiS project regarding pay rises for MPs
  • He considered that the time of crisis and the ongoing pandemic, as well as the fact that many people lose their jobs, were not the right time for pay raises
  • He called the move an “unforgivable mistake” and said it was “someone was out of experience”. He expressed the hope that senators would reject the bill at first reading
  • – I will definitely appeal that the chairman, Borys Budka, explain this decision and say where and how the mistake was made – he said
  • Parliamentarians granted themselves pay rises of several dozen percent

– I spoke to the club secretary and said that I would not vote for this project. I urge you to reject it – said the PO MP. – This is a provocation against the opposition. A blow to the only party that could threaten the current government is the provocation of Kaczyński.

Schetyna added that the decision to support the PiS project regarding pay rises for MPs was “a political suicide of the opposition”.

According to the TVN24 interlocutor, “it is a political mistake and we must draw conclusions from it”. – You cannot be introduced to the political game of Kaczyński, to division and a blow to the Civic Coalition. We need to rectify this situation, apologize to the Poles for what happened and say that it is an unforgivable mistake – said Schetyna.

– Today we have to say firmly that we are voting against this project. If there are other conclusions, I would like other parties, including PiS, to talk about it – he said.

– Because the whole odium of this unfortunate vote will hit the Civic Platform. If we want to talk about pay rises, we have to say that they will be from the next term of office, not during the crisis. It is suicidal, if someone makes such a decision, he disqualifies his party – commented on TVN24.

Schetyna argued that politicians should have “elementary decency” and criticized the granting of pay raises in times of crisis and pandemics, when thousands of people lose their jobs and many have reduced salaries.

The politician said he was surprised that such an important decision was not made at the level of the national board. – I don’t know who made such a controversial decision. Most of the deputies were not aware of the consequences of this decision – he said

– In such a situation, the national board must comment. If it does not, it means that communication is not working and these decisions are made personally by someone. By whom? We will know this week – he added.

– I will certainly appeal that the chairman, Borys Budka, explain and say where and how the mistake was made. Everything must be transparent here. This decision is indescribable and inexplicable. You have to apologize and close the topic and fight to regain credibility – said the PO MP on TVN24.

He also expressed the hope that the Senate would reject the bill in its entirety during today’s vote at 16.

– The decision of the senators will be very important and I hope they will reject this bill at first reading and we will be able to say that the matter is closed. We all feel guilty and ashamed of this situation – said Schetyna.
