Schalke: This negative record threatens coach Thomas Reis

FC Schalke 04’s 2-1 defeat at SV Werder Bremen was the ninth in a row for coach Thomas Reis. He is threatened with a bad record.

Schalke fight to stay in the Bundesliga and, to put it a little exaggeratedly, coaches Tommaso Reis fights against a looming negative record.

Because the football teacher has lost nine consecutive Bundesliga games over the seasons. With VfL Bochum, Reis lost 3-2 at Union Berlin on Matchday 34 of the 2021/2022 season and then started the current season with VfL with six defeats. After 1: 3 against Schalke he had to leave Bochum.

Two more defeats followed for Reis: this time as Schalke manager against Freiburg and the last against Bremen. He achieves a total of nine lost games in a row in the Bundesliga.

With this negative streak, Reis is already in the “top 10” of the series losing rankings among coaches in the Bundesliga.

To be more specific, Reis is in seventh place with nine consecutive Bundesliga failures. Together with Thomas Doll, who remained winless nine times in a row in 2008 with Dortmund and in 2019 with Hannover, Peter Neururer, who lost nine times in a row to Saarbrücken in the 1992/1993 season and Horst Buhtz, who he lost nine straight games in 1966 to Neunkirchen and Hannover.

So far only Michael Frontzeck, Ewald Lienen, Hermann Gerland, Josef Hickersberger, who have lost ten times in a row, Heinz Höher (eleven defeats) and “leader” Stefan Leitl have been worse off than the 49-year-old current Schalke coach as well as Doll, Neururer and Buhtz, who suffered 12 straight losses. This record wasn’t that long ago.

Leitl, who is currently the Hannover 96 manager, encountered this fate in the 2021/2022 season when he was coach of the Greuther Fürth football federation.

For Reis it is important to get at least one point in the next matches against Mainz, Bayern Munich and in the new year 2023 Frankfurt in order not to break Leitl’s record.
