Scene of panic in Times Square following the explosion of a manhole cover

SAccording to the police and fire departments of the Big Apple, a fire broke out following the explosion in three manholes but without causing any injuries.

Firefighters detected high levels of carbon monoxide in a nearby building in Times Square. A leak could have caused an explosion in the basement of the building, report several media.

“Two manhole covers were hit by an electrical short circuit,” said energy supplier Con Edison spokesman Karl-Erik Stromsta, quoted by CNN. “No breakdowns or injuries were reported,” he said.

After the blast, authorities closed off the area around 43rd Street and Broadway.
