Thirteen aircraft are currently not in use across Lufthansa. The reason is the cancellation of flights to mainland China due to the corona virus. However, depending on how the epidemic continues to expand worldwide, the impact could be even more drastic.
Lufthansa is already feeling the consequences of the epidemic financially. As board member Harry Hohmeister told the newspaper Handelsblatt, there are therefore cost-cutting measures in the group. For example, in the core brand, the filling of new positions is suspended or postponed. Solutions with unpaid leave or part-time offers for employees were also part of the savings measures, according to the manager.
Contracts with Condor expire
Hohmeister has bad news not only for its own employees, but also for Condor, which is being taken over by the Polish Lot. When the intention to buy was announced, it was speculated that Lufthansa would hardly want to continue working as a feeder for Condor. Now that’s definitely it.
«We will not immediately terminate all contracts with Condor. After all, these are also our customers, whom we cannot and do not want to leave alone, »said Hohmeister. But he added: “But when contracts expire, they expire.” Without the feeder flights from Lufthansa, it will not be easy for Condor to fill their long-haul jets.
Complaint to the EU Commission?
There had also been room for Lufthansa to have the Condor-PGL deal examined by the EU Commission. Hohmeister doesn’t say much about it. But he suggests that this could happen. «We will definitely take a very close look at this. I’m curious to see what Brussels says about it. »
