Saved little brother (4): Drowned himself

On July 23, a family of six was struck by a shocking tragedy during their annual vacation trip to the Missouri River, near Payne’s Landing in Forest City, Missouri.

In an interview with Today on NBC, mother Nikki Harris says that Asher (4) and Hailsley (6) had been standing in the shallow part of the river with their older brother Alex (18).

Suddenly the bottom gave way under the four-year-old. Helplessly, he was pulled out into the river by the strong current.

– Alex grabbed Asher to save him. Then he tried to swim towards shore while he fought for them not to sink, explains the mother.

Shouted for help

The parents heard the desperate screams from the river and came rushing over.

– The water moved so fast, I’ve never seen anything like it, says the father in an interview with NBC.

Mora arrived first and managed to pull Asher with her. But the parents had to watch helplessly as Alex disappeared underneath.

– I saw him let go of the roof and disappear underneath, says Nikki Harris.

– From a distance I saw how exhausted Alex was. I tried as hard as I could to get to him quickly.

Paying tribute to the son

In an open post on Facebook, his father Tyson Harris shares a photo and a moving tribute to the son he lost so tragically.

“My son Alex died yesterday in a drowning accident while rescuing his little brother”he begins the commemoration.

“Had it not been for him holding him up until his mother arrived, they would both be dead. I love you and I wish I could take your place. You are a hero, my son.”

For the online newspaper Today states the father that the four-year-old understands that Alex has saved his life.

– But I don’t think he understands that he will never come back.
