Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – A Saudi citizen was kidnapped in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, according to the official Saudi “Al-Ikhbariya” channel, while the Lebanese Interior Minister, Bassam Mawlawi, confirmed that the Lebanese authorities are working to free him from his kidnappers, who demanded a ransom of 400,000. dollar.
According to Al-Ikhbariya channel, a Saudi citizen working for Saudi Airlines in Beirut was kidnapped yesterday evening, Sunday, from the center of the commercial area in the Lebanese capital.
Al-Ekhbariya quoted a source as saying that the kidnappers sent a message requesting a ransom of $400,000, or one and a half million Saudi riyals. The source added, “The phone message was issued from the southern suburbs of Beirut, where the Hezbollah militia is based.”
Al-Ekhbariya explained that the kidnapped Saudi citizen works for Saudi Airlines.
In a statement posted on Twitter, the Saudi embassy in Beirut said it had received “a communication from the relatives of a citizen who lost contact with him at dawn on Sunday.”
She indicated that she is in contact with the Lebanese security authorities “at the highest levels to uncover the circumstances of the citizen’s disappearance.”
While the Lebanese Minister of Interior denied monitoring the Saudi citizen’s phone signal in the southern suburbs, explaining: “(The phone) was monitored in various places within Beirut and its suburbs, not in the southern suburbs of Beirut,” he said in an interview with Al-Arabiya Al-Hadath channel.
The Lebanese Minister of Interior also denied finding the Saudi citizen’s car in the Bekaa region, just as he said that the Lebanese authorities cannot deny the kidnappers’ demand for ransom.
Mawlawi said, in a tweet on his Twitter account: “We have been following up with the Information Division of the Internal Security Forces since yesterday the issue of the kidnapping of a Saudi citizen in Beirut, and we are in contact with the smallest details with His Excellency Ambassador Walid Al-Bukhari.”
And he continued, “We always, with an iron fist, work to liberate any citizen who is subjected to any harm on Lebanese soil. What happened affects Lebanon’s relationship with its brothers, and the perpetrators will be severely punished.”
