MOL, KOMPAS.com – At least 26 residents of a nursing home in Belgium the north has died since the visit of a man dressed as Santa Claus. Local media reported on Thursday (31/12/2020) that the Santa Claus has recently tested positive Covid-19.
A local health official told the news agency AFP, the plague was detected days after a visit by a Santa Claus at the Hemelrijck nursing home in the district of Mol. The virologist later said that those who were infected came from the same source.
Until now, 85 people have tested positive for Covid-19, along with 40 staff of the nursing home. As many as 26 people infected with Covid-19 have died.

Nursing homes are known to be the trigger for the spread of the Covid-19 infection. More than half of the Covid-19 victims who died in Belgium were residents of nursing homes.
Regional health agency spokesman Joris Moonen said there was no indication that the Santa Claus volunteer knew he had Covid-19 when he came to the home, which is home to more than 140 people.

Joris Moonen further explained that the authorities have not carried out an investigation regarding the spread of the infection that resulted in the death, if no complaints were filed by the victim.
The district of Mol and the Hemerijck home have set up a crisis committee to help staff, residents and relatives cope with “this difficult period”, he added.
Belgium is one of the countries with the highest number of Covid-19 deaths per capita in the world. With a population of 11.5 million people, Belgium recorded 19,411 deaths, of which 11,066 residents of nursing homes.
