Air traffic has stopped on the popular holiday islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Desert sand from the Sahara affects the view so much that initially no take-offs and landings are processed.
Sahara sand has shaken air traffic in the Canary Islands. Since the afternoon, machines in the Gran Canaria airport have been unable to take off and land due to poor visibility, as a spokeswoman for the operator Aena said.
Accordingly, planes can no longer land on Tenerife. The air traffic control, according to its own statements, tries to divert flights to other airports.
The islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are also affected by the sandstorm, authorities say. The regional government warned of strong winds with gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour. The storm, in which the hot wind brings fine sand dust from the Sahara, can last for several days. The Canary Islands, which belong to Spain, lie off the Moroccan coast in the Atlantic.
