Sandra got corona, her husband did not: ‘We kissed each other every day’

Sandra got hay fever during a walk in the woods in mid-June and was tested for corona. “To be on the safe side,” she tells RTL Nieuws. On June 19 she learned that she was positive. From that moment on, the whole family remained in quarantine for two weeks.

Also testing

Sandra did not touch her husband and children since the positive test. “I didn’t want to take any chances. I slept in a different room the entire quarantine time.”

But to be sure, Sandra’s husband and children also had themselves tested. “They had no complaints, but did it as a precaution. Mainly because they regularly have hay fever and we wanted to make sure that this was not corona.”

On June 22 they learned that they did not have corona. And she had not expected that result. “We couldn’t believe they weren’t infected.”

Kiss on the mouth

Because until the moment that Sandra got the positive test result, she had still been in close contact with her husband and children. “We were more careful, but my husband and I slept in the same bed every night and kissed each other on the mouth.”

Sandra also had contact with her 16-year-old son. “I just took care of him as normal: we cuddled and we sat together at the table. Afterwards I am of course very happy that I did not infect them, but it is all strange.”

Unbelief

The RIVM writes on his website that you can already be contagious just before you have complaints. That Sandra’s husband and children tested negative is therefore striking. “My environment could not believe that I had corona, but no one in my family had infected it. Everyone thought it was very strange. Me too.”

Not the only one

The story of Sandra and her family is not an isolated one. RTL Nieuws spoke to a number of others – they wanted to remain anonymous – with a similar story.

  • A woman (26) from Amsterdam says: “The night before my boyfriend tested positive, I had slept and kissed with him. When he got the results, I went into quarantine with him. I was completely convinced that I had corona. I was tested twice, but negative both times. “
  • Another 26-year-old woman from Amsterdam says: “I became ill on Tuesday to Wednesday night and got complaints that belong to corona. Saturday I tested positive. The Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before I became ill, I saw my parents. I saw I sat on the couch with them and did not keep enough distance. Also on Monday I shared a bottle of water with my mother. Both of them did not get infected. On Thursday I felt better again and saw my roommates. Seated together in a car and not kept enough distance. They all tested negative. “

Research Erasmus MC

Is a corona patient always contagious? Or is it more common that a corona patient is ill, but no one else lights up? Erasmus MC hopes to answer this question soon. They are starting an investigation together with the GGDs to see to what extent someone who tests positive for corona can also infect others. Some people may be carrying so few virus particles that they cannot infect others.

The research is still underway and it is unclear when the results are expected.

Similar research is carried out abroad. So say the scientists from Oxford University that some of the positively tested people can no longer infect others.
