Yesterday, the infectologist and president of the Guatemalan Association of Infectious Diseases (AGEI), Nancy Sandoval, exposed a case where the lack of vaccine due to misinformation led to the death of the person. The case contrasts with a group of people who yesterday demonstrated in front of Congress, asking that the vaccination process in the country be stopped, arguing a “health dictatorship.”

THE DRAMA OF A FAMILY THAT TRUSTED IN ITS PASTOR

In social networks, the infectologist Nancy Sandoval related the case of a woman who lost her daughter and mother to the virus, after trusting her pastor, who assured her that she did not need the vaccine.

«Today a health colleague who lost her daughter a few weeks ago due to COVID-19 entered the desaturated area after being at home with supplemental oxygen, she is an excellent person and worker, she trusted God and what her pastor told her: that He did not need the vaccine, only his faith, “he said through his Twitter account.

He added that, in addition to losing his daughter and mother, in his home there are several people positive for Covid-19 without having at least one dose of immunizer. The expert explained that she felt sorry for the case, assuring that they were not anti-vaccines or anticipation, but that they doubted because of the misinformation.

In this sense, Sandoval stressed that it has been suggested to hold a meeting with religious leaders, authorities and organizations that make decisions, for guidance or discussion. However, he expressed that nothing has happened, despite the urgency.

THE “SANITARY DICTATORSHIP”

Yesterday, a group of people held a demonstration in front of the Congress of the Republic, where in addition to rejecting the State of Calamity, they presented their position regarding vaccination against Covid-19.

In a video shared by journalist Wilder López from Soy502, several people are observed demanding that the immunization day in the country be stopped, arguing that it is a “health dictatorship.” In addition, on posters they expressed the following messages: “We are not anti-vaccines, we are proliberty”, “No to compulsory vaccination”, and “Chlorine dioxide does work.”

It should be noted that the vaccine is not mandatory, but it can be the difference between a severe case of Covid-19 or even death. That is why immunization and the importance of preserving life at the time of infection are stressed.

WHY GET VACCINATIONS?

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO), indicate that the vaccines approved, either by that organization or by a strict national regulatory agency, provide excellent protection against serious disease and hospitalization against the delta variant, as well as against other variants of concern.
In addition, they emphasize that vaccines against COVID-19 work very well and are a fundamental tool to control the pandemic.

”No vaccine is 100% effective in preventing disease in vaccinated people. There will be a small percentage of fully vaccinated people who will continue to get sick ”. That is why sanitary measures are still vital to avoid contagions.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) encourages people to get immunized with the first vaccine offered.

“All licensed vaccines have proven their safety and efficacy in preventing COVID-19 to the national regulatory agencies of each country.”

MORE THAN 12 THOUSAND DEATHS IN GT

Currently, more than 51 thousand cases of Covid-19 remain active in Guatemala. In addition, 12,203 people have lost their lives due to the disease. The mortality rate of the virus is 69.2 per 100 thousand inhabitants and the lethality of the virus reports 2.5%.

Regarding vaccination, according to the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS), so far, the country registers a total of 3,450,238 Guatemalans covered with first dose, equivalent to 32.77% of an estimated population of 10,529,192; while only 13.38% have the complete immunization scheme

In addition, the Covid-19 Dashboard details that 486,819 accumulated Covid-19 cases have been registered in the country, of which 51,516 remain active.
