Sanders Supports Six Progressive Candidates, Including Two Going Against Acting Democratic Congressmen | Univision News US Elections 2020

Senator Bernie Sanders announced Tuesday his support for progressive candidates in six constituencies, two of which face incumbent Democratic lawmakers.

“One of the ways we must continue to build our movement is by electing progressives at all levels of government,” Sanders wrote on Twitter.

In his first rally of support for candidates since he withdrew his presidential candidacy in April, Sanders included Puerto Rican Samelys López in the Bronx.

Sanders expressed his support for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden but at the same time seeks to accumulate as many delegates as possible to exert greater influence in formulating the party’s platform.

López, who aspires to secure housing as a universal human right, support a national ban on anti-union laws, and provide free health care, is one of 12 candidates to be measured June 23 at the Democratic primary to replace in District 15. from New York to José Serrano, who is retiring.

Sanders, leader of the more liberal wing of the Democratic Party also announced his support for direct rivals of two sitting Democratic lawmakers: New Yorker Eliot Engel, the chairman of the foreign affairs commission who has held his seat since 1989, and Lacy Clay, a member of the block of African-American lawmakers.

Sanders preferred to endorse Jamaal Bowman in District 16 in New York, and Cori Bush in District 1 in Missouri.

He also supported African-American state senator Charles Booker against retired military officer Amy McGrath, who has the support of the Democratic Party.

Booker and McGrath are part of the group of 10 candidates who will define on June 23 who will contest Mitch McConnell (leader of the Republican majority in the Senate) the representation of Kentucky in the Senate.

The other two candidates who received Sanders’ support are Mondaire Jones in the 17th district of New York, and Mike Siegel in the 10th district of Texas.

New York Democrat Legislator Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez also offered support to Bowman, Jones and Lopez.
