Toreros Prepare for WCC Competition Against Pepperdine and LMU
The University of San Diego volleyball team is set to begin West Coast Conference (WCC) play with matches against pepperdine and Loyola Marymount (LMU). The Toreros finished the 2024 season in second place in the WCC, behind league champion and NCAA Tournament participant LMU.
Facing the Waves: Pepperdine
San Diego holds a 38-45 record in the all-time series against Pepperdine, but secured victories in both matchups last season. In 2024, the Toreros defeated the Waves by a score of 3-1 on November 9 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion (JCP) and again on November 27 at the Firestone Fieldhouse.
Challenge from the lions: Loyola Marymount
The Toreros lead the overall series against LMU 49-44, though, they have lost the last four matches to the Lions, dating back to 2023. Last season, LMU won both contests in five-set decisions, prevailing 3-2 at Gersten Pavilion on October 10 and at the JCP on November 2.
San Diego’s last win against LMU came on November 17, 2022, in Los angeles, a 3-2 victory that helped preserve the Toreros’ undefeated WCC season. Earlier that same year, USD also defeated LMU 3-2 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on September 22, 2022.
new Playing Surface at the JCP
The 2025 season marked the debut of a new Taraflex court at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. This upgrade is part of a series of improvements to the venue, positioning it as a premier arena on the West Coast. The Taraflex surface is designed to provide athletes with superior shock absorption and grip. The court features USD, WCC, and sponsor logos on a light cherry colored surface with a navy blue border.
“The addition of Taraflex to the Jenny Craig Pavilion is representative of our continued investment in women’s volleyball here at USD,” said USD Associate Vice President/Executive Director of Athletics Kimya Massey. “Our student-athletes work tirelessly to uphold our program’s championship standard, and we’re proud to now provide them with a best-in-class playing surface that is comparable to what is used by the top programs in the country. This upgrade cements the Jenny Craig Pavilion’s status as the top volleyball venue in the West Coast Conference, and as one of the best facilities of its size in the nation. I’m grateful to our USD facilities team and everyone at Gerflor USA for their hard work to get this installed ahead of our first home game of 2025.”
The Toreros’ 2025 home opener against Yale on September 18 was the first-ever game played on the Taraflex surface at the JCP.
Long Road Swing to Start the Season
The Toreros began the 2025 season with eight consecutive away matches, the program’s longest season-opening road stretch since 2006, when they played nine straight contests away from home. San Diego opened the season with three matches in Honolulu (August 29-31) at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic, followed by three matches at the Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles (September 5-7). They then visited Washington for two matches before returning home to host Yale on September 18.
